Our Favorite October Books

This month we’re getting cozy with books that recall the magical feeling of the shifting seasons. Like the changing leaves, these characters and their surroundings are in metamorphosis. Sometimes, change can seem strange or even scary, but these stories revel in the excitement of discovery, transformation, and reinvention.

Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert

Lois Ehlert’s book Leaf Man follows a group of autumn leaves as they are blown by the wind over fields, past orchards, through prairie meadows, and across lakes and rivers. The leaves start out in the shape of a man and take on different configurations as they travel east, west, north, and south, going where the wind blows. Children will love searching the illustrations for hidden pictures formed by the leaves as they make their journey! The poetic text celebrates the natural landscape of the autumnal countryside.

Walter’s Wonderful Web by Tim Hopgood

This story is the simple yet vibrant adventure ion Walter, a determined little spider trying to make a sturdy web that will stand up to the blustery wind. The webs he makes at first are woven in special shapes--a triangle, a square, a circle--but they are still wibbly-wobbly. Can Walter make a web that is both wonderful and strong?

Oscar and the Cricket by Geoff Waring

This book introduces little readers to the essential principals of physics and kinesiology with a simple and charming story. One day Oscar sees a ball in the grass. “Try pushing it!” says Cricket. Oscar learns that the ball rolls slowly in grass and faster on a path, until it bounces off a tree and changes direction. Some things need a push to move, and others use their muscles to move themselves -- and to move plenty of other things, too.

Windows by Julia Denos

While walking his dog at dusk, a boy catches glimpses of the lives around him. This book is a lovely ode to autumn evenings, exploring your neighborhood, and coming home. As he goes down his street and around the corner, the windows around him light up one by one until he realizes he is walking through a maze of paper lanterns, each one granting him a brief, glowing snapshot of his neighbors as families come together and folks settle in for the night.

Perfect Square by Michael Hall

A perfect square is transformed in this adventure story that will transport you far beyond the four equal sides of this square book. Each day the square is altered and each day, rearranges itself into a new clever and fun object. Our protagonist, the square, finds in each transformation that it can be something new, and just as happy.
