Valentine's Day Heart Collage

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to create a heart collage with your little artist! All materials used for this project can be found right in your kitchen cabinets or recycling bin. Gather your little Valentine and go on a scavenger hunt to find the project materials to start the creative process!

Project Materials

+ thin cardboard (cereal box or thick paper)

+ scissors

+ recycled materials (magazine, newspaper, paper scraps)

+ water

+ flour

+ food coloring or tempera paint - anything works!

+ paint brush

+ hole punch (optional)

1. First, make a heart out of thin cardboard, a cereal box, or thick paper. Invite your little one to cut out the heart if the material is thin enough and if they can safely handle scissors!

2. Go on a scavenger hunt to collect magazine, newspaper and paper scraps! Cut, rip and tear into smaller pieces and shapes.


3. Sort the paper by color, focusing on warm hues for the heart. Name the colors as you sort!

4. Time to mix up the gooiest glue! Mix one part water with one part flour in a bowl. Add a couple drops of food coloring or any kind of paint on hand to create colorful glue!

5. Use a paint brush to apply the paper pieces to the heart. Encourage your artist to layer pieces and cover the entire heart with bright color.

6. Set aside to dry. Add a hole in the middle for hanging or give away as a special Valentine’s Day gift. You can even make multiple to pass out to everyone you love!
