Capture the sun with these colorful and creative Sun Catchers!

The sun is shining and we can’t get enough of it! This month’s craft is all about catching that sunshine and bringing it inside - or better yet, take this craft outside with you! There’s minimal materials in hopes you can take this craft where ever you are this summer.

We’re painting with yarn in this at-home project, to offer a mess free alternative to the traditional sun catchers and to make it friendly for even the smallest artist! Choose your favorite colorful, bright, and chunky yarn and get to creating.

We’ve included all the steps and materials you’ll need below. Follow along to try it out at home.

Materials:

  • Colorful card stock paper

  • Contact paper

  • Colorful yarn

  • Pencil

  • Scissors

Let’s get started!

Steps

1. First, use a pencil to draw your card stock frame. We drew ours to look like a flower by first drawing a flower shape in the middle of our paper, then drawing a larger flower shape around the flower, leaving about 1 inch of space between the lines.

2. Next, cut the inside of the inner flower out using scissors.

3. Uncover your contact paper and stick the card stock paper to the sticky contact paper. after it is stuck, we like to replace the protective paper on the contact paper so it’s easier to work with as we finish cutting out the frame.

4. Next, carefully cut the outside of the outer flower line. You now have a flower-shaped contact paper frame.

5. Remove the protective backing from the contact paper and begin sticking yarn! Carefully place yarn pieces to create a dynamic design or pattern.

6. When you are all done, you can hang your yarn painting in front of a window to see how the light shines through!

Enjoy your craft time!
