Tape Resist Placemats

Follow these simple steps to create a colorful layered painting using tape resist! This project is great for all ages and can be adapted to use a variety of art materials.

Materials

  • 8.5 x11” paper or larger, plain or colored

  • Masking tape or painter’s tape

  • 2-3 colors of paint (or coloring tools like crayons)

  • Paintbrushes

  • Contact paper (optional)

Steps

1. Create a design on your paper using tape- these areas will remain the original color of the paper.

2. Choose a color to paint over the entire paper, including the areas with tape. Let dry.

3. Create a second tape design on top of the paint. Choose a new color and paint over the entire paper again. Let dry.

4. Repeat steps 2-3 with as many colors as you would like. Once all the paint is dry, peel away the layers of tape beginning with the last layer you did. Go slowly and carefully to keep the paper from tearing.

5. Your tape resist painting is finished! Make as many paintings as you would like, experimenting with different tape designs.

6. Optional: Use contact paper on both sides of your paintings to seal them and turn them into placemats!
