Stacking Shapes

Put your engineering skills to the test with this fun shape stacking challenge using just paper and tape!

This project is best for ages 4+, but can be adapted for little ones too.

Materials for Stacking Shapes

  • 10–20 paper rectangles all cut to the same size (like 3”x6”)

  • Ruler

  • Pencil

  • Tape

Let’s get started!

Steps for Stacking Shapes

1. Fold the rectangles into 3 equal sections to make equilateral triangles. Use a ruler to measure equal parts and mark with a pencil (a 3x6” rectangle can be folded into 2” sections.

2. Tape the triangle ends together.

3. Using at least 10 triangles, create the tallest stack you can!

4. For even more fun, repeat the challenge using paper squares or cylinders. Which shape is easiest to stack? Can you use a combination of all three shapes?
