DIY Summer Party Banners

Summer has officially arrived—and whether you're planning a backyard barbecue, a birthday bash, or just want to brighten up a room, this month’s DIY project has found you just in time!

This project is perfect for summertime: it's easy, customizable, and a great way to reuse materials you already have at home. Plus, it doubles as both a fun art activity and a handmade decoration for your next celebration.

This craft is appropriate for all ages, so get the kids involved in helping with your party decor! Hang your banner inside, outside, or anywhere you want a splash of creativity and color.

Check out the full instructions and material list below to get started!

Materials:

  • Paper

  • Tempera paint in a few colors (we recommend choosing either warm or cool color pallet for your paint)

  • No-spill paint cups or a palette

  • Paint brushes

  • Pencil

  • String

  • Scissors

  • Ruler

  • Patterned washi tape or hot glue

Let’s get started!

Steps

1. Decorate paper with your paints. Encourage your little artists to mix colors and cover the whole page. We recommend choosing a color palette, such as all warm or all cool colors, so it is visually cohesive. Once painted, leave paper to dry. Alternatively you can skip the painting and use old artwork that you might already have at home.

2. Use a pencil and ruler to draw isosceles triangles on the back of the paper. for 8.5 x 11" paper, measure and mark 5.5" (or halfway) up the 11" side of the paper, and on the opposing 11" side measure and mark 2.75" and 8.25". Then, draw lines to connect the 2.75" mark with the 5.5" mark on the opposite side, then draw a line to connect the 8.25" mark with the 5.5" mark. This will create 3 equal sized triangles, and two half-sized triangles.

3. Use scissors to carefully cut out your triangles. Adults please supervise cutting with scissors to avoid any accidents.

*pro-tip, if you have a paper cutter, you can make these super quickly!

4. Tape (or hot glue!) your triangle to string, evenly spacing them from one another.

5. Hang on the wall, window, or fence for a fun DIY celebration banner!

*want to customize the banner more? Write a letter on each triangle for a personalized touch!

Enjoy your craft time!
