Get ready for an art adventure using Sharpies to create colorful tie-dye! In this fun at-home activity, little artist(s) will use vibrant Sharpie markers and rubbing alcohol to create patterns of all kinds and watch as they create custom tie-dye pieces. As you experiment, explore how colors mix and play together, while thinking about color palettes and composition.
This project offers a unique and creative way to make a one-of-a-kind masterpiece while learning the magic of color blending!
Weβve included all the steps and materials youβll need below. Follow along to try it out at home.
Materials:
Pipettes
Sharpies (or other permanent alcohol-based marker) in every color except black and brown
Cotton fabric, such as Minni canvas pencil cases
Cardboard cut to fit pencil case
Rubbing alcohol
Small bowl
*Note: this activity can get smelly so itβs best done outside or in a well ventilated area. Itβs also ideal for ages (4+) with adult supervision.*
Letβs get started!
Steps
1. Place your cardboard inside your pencil case to prevent bleeding.
2. Use sharpies to make a few shapes (keeping it simple). Use a pipette to drop rubbing alcohol on the sharpie shapes. The colors will bleed and **mix**.
3. Encourage students to be mindful of their color choices as they work. When they place two colors close together, notice how those colors will mix.
4. Encourage students to think about their **color palette**, or which colors they choose to use together, and how they would like to create the **composition** on their pencil case.
5. Repeat this process until you have completed your desired design. Try filling the whole space with color!
