DIY Egg Carton Mushrooms 🍄

Let’s Making some Magical Mushrooms!

This project is for those that are inspired by the magical wonders of the great outdoors! Hang on to your recyclables this week, using recycled egg cartons and other common recyclables like marker caps and wine corks, you’ll find you already have all you need for this project right at home.

Appropriate for ages 3+ or can be adapted for the littlest artists. However, we highly encourage that there is an adult present when using a hot glue gun.

We’ve included all the steps and materials you’ll need below. Follow along to try it out at home.

Materials:

  • Recycled cardboard egg cartons

  • Corrugated cardboard, recycled corks, or recycled marker caps

  • Hot glue (for grown-ups)

  • Tempera paint

  • Paint brushes (larger brushes and small detail brushes. Optional: include some q-tips to make dots!)

  • Scissors

Let’s get started!

Steps

1. Start by separating egg cartons into individual cups.

2. Next, trim the edges of each egg carton segment to your preferred shape to create your mushroom cap.

3. With help from a grown-up, hot glue the stem of your mushroom inside the mushroom cap. You can use recycled corks or marker caps as a stem, or roll up corrugated cardboard and hot glue it into a stem shape.

4. After the glue cools, paint the mushroom with your preferred colors, then let the base coat dry.

5. Finally, use a detail brush or q-tip to paint textures or other patterns on your mushroom cap.

Enjoy your craft time!
