Let’s make some magnificent monsters!

Bring your favorite creepy creatures to life this Halloween with this spook-tacular project! Transform those ordinary egg cartons into your scariest ghouls, goblins, and monsters that can haunt your home for Halloween.

Imagine crafting a menacing monster with googly eyes, wild pipe cleaner arms and fanged teeth. Gather your supplies, summon your inner monster, and get ready for a frightfully fun at-home project of monster-making that will spark creativity in your little ghouls and goblins!

We’ve included all the steps and materials you’ll need below. Follow along to try it out at home.

Materials:

  • Markers

  • Coloring pages

  • Blocks or other toys for very young children

  • Printed Prompts in acrylic frames

  • Scissors

  • Egg cartons (Separated into individual cups for monster heads and pumkins, sections of three cups for bats, and tall points from between the cups for witches hats and ghosts. Make to leave enough of the egg carton shapes so participants will be able to trim them and create the monsters.)

  • Tempera paint in spill proof cups (white, black, orange, green, purple, metallic silver)

  • Paint brushes (large and small)

  • Oil pastels

  • Paint markers (if we have them)

  • Ribbon pieces

  • Small 1” felt circles

  • Googly eyes

  • Pipe cleaner pieces

  • Examples of egg carton monsters

Let’s get started!

Steps

1. We encourage you to show little artist(s) examples of undecorated egg cartons and completed monsters. Invite your little one to brainstorm what creatures they might create! Participants can look at halloween books for inspiration, such as An A–Z of Monsters and Magical Beings.

2. Begin by carefully using scissors to trim recycled egg cartons into their desired shape for their monster.

3. Next, invite your little one(s) to color their monster. If they have time to let paint dry or feel comfortable transporting wet creations home, invite them to use tempera paint to add a base color. If participants do not want to use paint, invite them to color their egg carton with oil pastels.

4. Let paint dry (if necessary), then add smaller details, like facial features, with oil pastel or paint markers, googly eyes, and pipe cleaners.

5. Finally, if students would like to be able to hang their monster creations, use ribbon to add a loop to the top. You can secure the ribbon to the top of the monster by threading it through a hole in the top and securing it to a felt circle on the inside.

Enjoy your craft time!
