DIY Organic Watercolor Paint

Use spices and vegetables to make your own watercolor paint! Follow these simple steps for making vibrant natural paints in primary colors. Paints will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 1 week.

Materials

  • Turmeric

  • Beets

  • Red cabbage

  • White vinegar

  • Baking soda

  • Cutting board + knife

  • Saucepan

  • Mixing bowl

  • Slotted spoon or colander

  • Small containers for storing paint

Steps for DIY Organic Watercolor Paint

First up… Red!

1. Cut the beets into cubes.

2. Add to a saucepan. Use just enough water to cover the beets and simmer on low for about 30 minutes.

3. Strain the beets or remove them from the pot using a colander or slotted spoon. Set aside the liquid to cool. Optional: Continue to simmer the liquid for 15-30 minutes until it reduces to make a deeper color.

4. Add a splash of white vinegar. Your red paint is ready!

Up next… Yellow!

1. Fill a small mixing bowl with water and slowly stir in turmeric. Experiment with color intensity! More turmeric will appear more orange, less with appear yellow!

2. Your yellow paint is ready!

Finally… Blue!

1. Cut or tear the red cabbage into pieces and add to a saucepan. Cover about halfway with water and simmer on low for 30 minutes.

2. Strain the cabbage and set liquid aside to cool. Optional: Continue to simmer the liquid for 15-30 minutes until it reduces to make a deeper color.

3. Sprinkle in baking soda little by little and watch the color change from purple to blue. Go slowly! Use no more than ¼ tsp baking soda: 1 cup liquid

4. Your blue paint is ready!

Optional: You can use your new paints as is or mix to experiment with making new hues!
