Artist Spotlight: Margaret Robe
"Color Stitch - Break" by Boston based artist Margaret Robe is a 25-foot translation of a small watercolor landscape painstakingly “stitched” together with over 3,000 MT Washi Tape pieces. Designed as a wall covering for Minni’s bright studio, Color Stitch spans the space as a meticulous study of light and color, a mathematical feat and a celebration of the cross stitch.
Check out Margaret’s most recent public installation, “Color Stitch - Dash.”
Interview with the artist:
BH: Hello Margaret! Can you tell me about your background?
Margaret: I have a BA in studio art + art history and have worked at various Boston based arts organizations for the last four years. As Minni’s Program Manager I plan and develop our programs and events!
BH: We are so lucky to have you at Minni! What inspires you?
Margaret: I am inspired by many contemporary artists and designers in Boston. A lot of my work is also inspired by the foundational art + design concepts we teach at Minni, as well as the artists who explore them in our studio.
BH: How did you make this installation?
Margaret: With patience. Each piece of tape is cut to be exactly 5” and the wall was carefully measured and gridded out before installation. The rest is a secret!
BH: That installation is quite the achievement! What’s your favorite part of your work?
Margaret: I appreciate repetition of simple forms and limited color palettes.
BH: What gives you the most joy?
Fearless color and lots of it!
