Collaborative Weaving – Easy Projects to Explore at Home
Collaborative Weaving (Ages 4+)
Now is the time to clean out your linen closet and drawers! Grab some old sheets, colorful fabrics, yarn, ribbon and even shoe laces and create a collaborative woven “textile.”
Materials
+ yarn (the thicker the better)
+ ribbon, shoe laces, fabric cut or ripped into strips
+ strips of cardboard (optional)
+ tape
Steps
1. First, make a simple “loom” on your wall by taping 6 vertical strips of wide ribbon or strips of cardboard. Tape firmly on the top and the bottom and space each strip about 1” apart. The length of each strip depends on how long you want your finished piece to be.
2. Next, choose a piece of yarn or fabric and show your textile designer how to weave an “over, under” pattern. To make this project simple, just use one length of each material for each row.
3. Keep weaving and alternating material until your loom is full all the way to the top!
